Check out the awesome work YSHS Art students are doing! They have been given the challenge of creating a "self-portrait journal." Because we all know what we look like on the surface, students are not creating drawings of their faces, but a series of collages that represent personal identity. These pages are being incorporated into art journals that we will use throughout the fall.

Students often struggle to conceptualize a work of art that deals in symbolism and/or abstract design elements, rather than a concrete drawing task. To help students identify effective design elements, they gave warm and cool feedback to each other on the following criteria:

  • Variety (of materials, textures, and shapes)

  • Layout, including balance and use of layers

  • Creative Expression

  • Craftsmanship

After identifying successful design elements and reflecting upon feedback, students began making revisions. In the images, you can see them using the warm and cool feedback (on the yellow sticky notes) to create a revision plan. They are now ready to begin finalizing their book pages. Check them out!
